What Is Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder?
Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) is a feeding and eating condition characterized by a persistently limited diet, not due to concerns about weight or body shape, but driven by sensory sensitivities, fear of aversive food experiences such as choking or vomiting, or low interest in eating.
ARFID is not a phase or a preference. It is a recognized DSM-5 clinical diagnosis that can cause significant nutritional deficiencies, dependence on supplements, and serious social impairment, including avoiding restaurants, work lunches, and relationships because of food-related anxiety.
Many adults with ARFID have lived with these patterns since childhood and assumed treatment was not available or only meant for children. Our Tempe program provides specialized ARFID treatment for adults using evidence-based approaches adapted to adult presentations of the condition.
ARFID is driven by:
Sensory sensitivities to texture, taste, smell, or appearance. Fear of choking, vomiting, or allergic reactions. Low appetite or low interest in food and eating.
ARFID is NOT driven by:
Concerns about body weight, shape, or appearance. Desire to lose weight. Body image distortion. These characteristics distinguish ARFID from anorexia and other eating disorders.
ARFID commonly co-occurs with:
Anxiety disorders, autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, OCD, and sensory processing differences. Our clinical team addresses co-occurring conditions alongside ARFID treatment.
Recognizing ARFID: When to Seek Treatment
ARFID in adults often goes unrecognized because restrictive eating can appear to others as picky eating. These signs indicate a clinical level of impairment that responds well to structured treatment.
ARFID is treatable at any age. If these patterns are affecting your nutrition, health, or daily life, our clinical team can help. Start with a free, confidential assessment.
How We Treat ARFID in Adults
ARFID treatment requires a specialized approach distinct from other eating disorders. Our Tempe program uses a multidisciplinary team to address the behavioral, sensory, nutritional, and anxiety-based dimensions of ARFID recovery.
Graduated Food Exposure
Structured, step-by-step exposure to avoided foods at a pace determined by the patient. The goal is to reduce food-related anxiety and expand variety without overwhelming sensory or fear responses.
CBT for ARFID
Cognitive behavioral therapy addressing the anxiety, avoidance patterns, and safety behaviors that maintain ARFID, including fear of choking or vomiting, perfectionism around food, and social avoidance.
Nutritional Rehabilitation
Registered dietitians address nutritional deficiencies, establish adequate intake, and develop a realistic, individualized plan that supports expansion of food variety over time.
Individual Therapy
One-on-one sessions addressing personal ARFID history, trauma around food, co-occurring anxiety or sensory differences, and individualized recovery goals with a licensed eating disorder therapist.
Group Therapy
Peer-supported sessions with others navigating ARFID recovery. Reduces the isolation and shame that commonly accompany ARFID in adults and provides accountability in a safe clinical environment.
Medical Monitoring
Coordination with your medical provider to monitor nutritional markers, weight, and physical health throughout treatment, ensuring ARFID recovery is medically safe at the IOP level of care.
