Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions About Our Services

Everything you need to know about TMS, Spravato, ketamine, IOP, and getting started at SMHWI.

What is TMS therapy and how does it work?
TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) is an FDA-cleared, non-invasive treatment that uses targeted magnetic pulses to stimulate brain regions associated with mood regulation. Sessions are outpatient, require no anesthesia, and take approximately 20 to 40 minutes. Most patients complete a standard course over 4 to 6 weeks. TMS is effective for depression, anxiety, and OCD and is covered by most major insurance plans at SMHWI.
What is Spravato and is it covered by insurance?
Spravato is the FDA-approved brand name for esketamine nasal spray, specifically indicated for treatment-resistant depression and major depressive disorder with suicidal ideation. Unlike ketamine infusions, Spravato has formal FDA approval and is covered by most major insurance plans when medically necessary. It is administered in-office under medical supervision at all four SMHWI locations.
What is treatment-resistant depression?
Treatment-resistant depression (TRD) is defined as major depressive disorder that has not responded adequately to at least two different antidepressant medications tried at adequate doses and for sufficient duration. SMHWI specializes in FDA-cleared and evidence-based interventional treatments for TRD including TMS, Spravato, and ketamine, available at all of our Arizona and Texas locations.
Does insurance cover TMS therapy at SMHWI?
Yes. TMS therapy is covered by most major insurance plans including Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, United Healthcare, and Humana when medical necessity criteria are met. Our team handles insurance verification before treatment begins. Call or complete the online form for a free benefits check.
What is ketamine therapy used for?
Ketamine therapy at SMHWI is used for treatment-resistant depression, PTSD, and severe anxiety that has not responded to standard medications or therapy. Ketamine acts on NMDA receptors rather than serotonin receptors, offering a different mechanism from traditional antidepressants and often producing rapid improvement in symptoms. All ketamine therapy is administered by licensed psychiatric providers in a monitored clinical setting.
What is an IOP and who is it for?
An Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is structured mental health treatment that meets multiple days per week, typically 3 days per week at 3 hours per session. It provides group therapy, individual counseling, and psychiatric support for adults who need more support than weekly therapy but do not require inpatient or residential care. SMHWI offers IOP for mental health, eating disorders, and co-occurring conditions, with virtual IOP available throughout Arizona and Texas.
What locations does SMHWI serve?
SMHWI operates four locations: Scottsdale, AZ (8350 E Raintree Dr); Tempe, AZ (1492 S Mill Ave); Glendale, AZ (6120 W Bell Rd); and Rockwall, TX (810 E Ralph Hall Pkwy). All four locations offer TMS therapy, Spravato, ketamine, IOP, and medication management. Virtual IOP and telepsychiatry are available statewide in Arizona and Texas.
How do I become a patient at SMHWI?
Getting started is straightforward. Call your nearest SMHWI location or complete the online intake form. Our team will verify your insurance at no cost, conduct a confidential clinical assessment, and work with you to determine the right services. Most patients are seen within a few days of their first contact.
How long does IOP last and how many days per week is it?
An Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) at SMHWI meets three days per week, with each session lasting approximately three hours. A full course of treatment typically runs six to eight weeks, though duration is adjusted based on each patient's clinical progress. IOP is designed for adults who need more structured support than weekly therapy but do not require inpatient admission. SMHWI offers IOP for general mental health, eating disorders, and co-occurring conditions, with virtual IOP available statewide across Arizona and Texas.
Does insurance cover IOP treatment?
Yes. IOP is covered by most major insurance plans at SMHWI, including Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, United Healthcare, and Humana, when medical necessity criteria are met. Our team verifies your benefits and manages prior authorization at no cost before treatment begins. Coverage applies to both mental health IOP and eating disorder IOP. Patients with out-of-network plans or without insurance can discuss flexible payment options with our admissions team.

Deborah Baum

Deborah Baum, PMHNP,

Deborah was a nurse for 19 years before becoming a Board Certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. Deborah became a Licensed Practical Nurse in 2004 and then graduated as a Registered Nurse with her Associate of Applied Science Degree in Nursing in 2012 from Excelsior College. In 2019 Deborah earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Capella University. Then Deborah graduated from Walden University in 2022 where she received her Master of Science in Nursing/Psychiatric Mental Health.

Before starting her journey of 7 years as an RN in mental health, Deborah worked in a variety of medical settings such as ER, Urgent Care, Oncology, Hospice, Med-Surg., Phone Triage, etc. But it was while working in the jail setting as a traveling nurse that she found her interest and passion for mental health since the prevalence of mental disorders within its population is high.

She then realized that many of the inmates were incarcerated for behaviors caused by their mental illness and that these types of facilities are not meeting the demand for treatment of psychiatric disorders. After finishing her travel assignment, Deborah decided to start working as a Psychiatric nurse and worked for institutions including Banner Behavioral Health, Phoenix Childrens Hospital, and Arizona State Hospital where she obtained experience with the children, adolescents, and adult population.

Deborah is passionate about mental health since she believes that individuals’ mental well-being is just as important as physical health. She has seen the impact it can have on individuals and society. Mental health is an often an overlooked aspect of overall health, and she believes that it is time for society to pay attention to it. Deborah believes that through advocacy she can work towards reducing the stigma surrounding mental health, ensuring that individuals receive the help they need without judgment or discrimination.

Deborah is eager to empower individuals to seek help, promote early intervention, and foster a supportive environment where her patients can thrive mentally and emotionally.

Samantha Willen, DNP, PMHNP-BC,

My name is Samantha Willen, and I am a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner at SMHWI. I earned my Doctor of Nursing Practice from the University of Arizona and am board certified in Psychiatric-Mental Health.

I specialize in anxiety, depression, and substance use disorders, working primarily with adults with co-occurring disorders. My approach to care is collaborative and strengths-focused, emphasizing each client’s unique resilience and capacity for growth. I often use cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), and mindfulness-based interventions to help clients build insight and develop practical coping skills.

I chose this profession because I have a family member who struggled with mental health challenges, and that experience showed me how important compassion and understanding are in the healing process. I find it most rewarding to build meaningful relationships with my clients and help them feel better and more hopeful about their lives.

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my husband and two daughters, and indulging in my guilty pleasure of watching Bravo shows.
