What Is Binge Eating Disorder?
Binge eating disorder (BED) is the most common eating disorder in the United States. It is characterized by recurrent episodes of eating unusually large amounts of food in a short period, accompanied by a feeling of loss of control during the episode and significant distress afterward.
Unlike bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder does not involve compensatory behaviors such as purging, excessive exercise, or fasting after episodes. BED frequently co-occurs with depression, anxiety, and shame, which can make it difficult to recognize the disorder or seek help.
BED is a recognized clinical diagnosis under the DSM-5 and responds well to structured, evidence-based treatment. Our Tempe IOP provides the intensive clinical care needed to interrupt binge eating patterns and address the emotional and psychological factors that maintain them.
Recognizing Binge Eating Disorder
You don't need to be certain about your diagnosis to reach out. If any of these patterns feel familiar, a confidential assessment with our clinical team can provide clarity and a path forward.
You don't need to meet every criterion to benefit from treatment. If binge eating is affecting your quality of life, our clinical team can help you find the right level of care. Start with a free, confidential assessment.
How We Treat Binge Eating Disorder
Our Tempe BED treatment program uses an integrated, evidence-based approach targeting the behavioral, emotional, and nutritional dimensions of binge eating disorder recovery.
CBT-E
Enhanced cognitive behavioral therapy targeting the thoughts, emotions, and behaviors that drive binge eating episodes. It is the leading evidence-based treatment for BED with strong clinical outcomes.
DBT Skills
Emotional regulation and distress tolerance techniques to manage binge urges, reduce emotional eating, and build alternative coping strategies that don't rely on food.
Nutritional Counseling
Working with registered dietitians to establish regular, structured eating patterns, reduce food restriction that triggers binges, and develop a healthier relationship with food.
Group Therapy
Peer-supported sessions that reduce the isolation and shame associated with binge eating disorder, providing accountability and connection in a safe, confidential clinical environment.
Individual Therapy
One-on-one sessions addressing personal triggers, underlying emotional patterns, trauma, shame, and individualized binge eating disorder recovery goals with a licensed therapist.
Psychiatric Support
Medication evaluation when clinically appropriate. Some patients with binge eating disorder benefit from pharmacological support alongside therapy for depression, anxiety, or BED itself.

What Happens in Each BED Treatment Session
Each session is structured around three integrated components of binge eating disorder recovery: understanding emotional drivers, challenging the underlying beliefs, and building lasting behavioral change.
- A clearer picture of what emotions, situations, and thoughts reliably trigger binge episodes — and why
- Practical skills for sitting with discomfort and urges without acting on them
- An understanding of how dietary restriction and food rules make binge eating more likely. Learn how to break the cycle
- Insight into how shame, low self-worth, and difficult emotions are connected to binge eating, and how to interrupt that connection
- Tools to challenge the negative self-talk that maintains the binge-shame cycle
- Space to address co-occurring depression, anxiety, or trauma that contributes to disordered eating
- A more peaceful, flexible relationship with food, eating without guilt, rigid rules, or the fear of losing control
- Practical nutritional guidance from a registered dietitian to structure eating in a way that reduces binge risk
- A personalized relapse prevention plan for maintaining binge eating disorder recovery after IOP

Who Benefits Most from BED IOP
Intensive outpatient treatment provides a higher level of clinical support than weekly therapy: three sessions per week with access to specialized therapists, dietitians, and peer support. It is designed for individuals who need structured, consistent treatment but do not require residential, inpatient, or PHP-level care.
Our clinical team conducts a thorough assessment to determine whether our Tempe binge eating disorder IOP is the right level of care for you, and can refer to higher or lower levels of care if appropriate.
